Biography
Jeff Knapp

I began learning music at seven years old, playing the piano in my parents’ home, then taking lessons with a neighborhood teacher. During primary and secondary schools I learned to play, then wrote for and performed with woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. I entered Berklee College (of Music) in 1971 in an arranging program, than in 1973 and ‘74 studied clarinet at New England Conservatory. I wrote original compositions for secondary and collegiate orchestral bands, and scored arrangements of existing music for trios, quartets and stage bands.

I studied classic guitar with Walter Spalding from 1974 to 1977, then attended master classes with Jose Rey de la Torres in 1978, and Jad Azkoul in 1990. From the late 1970’s through the early 90’s, I taught privately for commercial studios, and for private school and collegiate programs. This involved “strictly classical” parameters in some programs and, in less formal environments, popular materials bridging a history and variety of electric styles.

I have returned more exclusively to the guitar’s traditional repertoire this decade. In addition to concertizing in the New England region, I am currently readying for recording, materials by Antonio Lauro of Venizuela, a series of preludes by Manuel Ponce from Mexico, and an impressionistic “Sarabande” (in five-four,) one of Francois Poulenc’s late works (for Ida Presti in 1950.)
